MAS | Museum Aan de Stroom

The MAS is more than a museum. It is a new city centre; a new meeting place where there is always something to see and do.

An escalator takes visitors from the ground floor to +9. Along the way they take in views of Antwerp through the 6-metre-high glass panels - a foretaste of what awaits at the top: a sweeping panorama of the city, the port and the river.
The MAS Boulevard is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 9.30 - 24.00 hrs (until 22.00 hrs in the Winter). There is no charge.

Zoo in Antwerp

Antwerp Zoo is a zoo in the centre of Antwerp, Belgium, located right next to the Antwerpen-Centraal railway station. It is the oldest animal park in the country, and one of the oldest in the world, established on 21 July 1843.

Vlaeykensgang

This is one of the oldest surviving sections of Antwerp. It's a warren of narrow alleys and passageways, that connect homes, small shops, cafes, etc. It's very easy to get lost in here, so don't go if you're in a hurry to get to something else.

Although sometimes called an “insider tip”, this alley is like a must do on an Antwerp sightseeing trip. This has led to an increase in number of visitors and a widespreading tof this secret. In the Vlaakiensgang, you will get a small impresiion of how Antwerp’s old town looked like in the 16th century. For centuries, the alley was in a bad condition until a larger restauration projet took place in the 1960s. If you are lucky to be quite alone, you will feel the quiet atmostphere in contrast to the busy streets around you.

Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp

Considered the largest Gothic Cathedral in the lowlands, as it has been rebuilt over the 100's of years there are elements of renaissance, rococco and baroque in the architecture, as well as incredible carvings, as well as paintings by Rubens and many other world class artists. From the 9th to 12th century it was the site of a small chapel. Construction on the new church began in 1352. Completed in 1521, and then in 1533 it was gutted by a fire. With its 123 meters hight tower still is the highest building in downtown Antwerp.

The only finished tower of the Cathedral of Our Lady has been defined as a masterpiece of lace work in stone: delicate filigree decorations adorn the svelte spire which rises ethereally and seemingly effortless. It is the main land mark of the city and defines its skyline, of which it is the highest point. It is particularly from far beyond, where you can appreciate how tall and slender this tower is. Although the tower is visible from many parts of the old town, it is from the waterfront that you have the best perspective, especially under the glowing rays of the setting sun.

As the former belfry of the city, the cathedral's tower is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can climb the more than 500 steps to the top and enjoy the view of the city and its port as well as the carillon it contains with 47 bells.

Het Steen - National Maritime Museum, Antwerp

Het Steen, literally "The Stone", is often referred to as The Castle but was originally one of the old city's fortified gates, dating from around the 12th century. The building attached to the gateway was used as a prison from 1300, or so, until about 1827.

Under Charles V (circa 1520) it was rebuilt as a fortress with its commanding field of fire over the river, thus protecting the port and the Medieval city. When the docks were redeveloped in the early 19th century the surrounding area was levelled to allow the strengthening of the river banks and the construction of new wharves.

From 1890 the building was used to house the Archaeological Museum and then in 1952 an annex was added to accommodate the Maritime Museum which has since moved to the MAS

The present-day building still houses a museum, but unfortunately this is shut on Mondays (when I was there), and is also used for educational workshops.
